Quarry Hill, Silver Lake, the Douglas State Trail, Chester Woods and Oxbow Park: the outdoor places that shape life in and around Rochester.
Ask people what they love about living in Rochester and the outdoors comes up quickly. The city's Parks and Recreation department oversees more than 3,500 acres of parkland, and a paved trail system of more than 85 miles connects more than 100 city parks. Olmsted County and the Minnesota DNR add larger parks and a state trail just beyond the city line. Here is a tour of the places our clients mention most.
Silver Lake Park
In the heart of Rochester, Silver Lake Park wraps a 1.8-mile loop around the water for walking, jogging, rollerblading and biking. Paddleboats and canoes are available in season, shore anglers commonly catch bluegill and black crappie, and Giant Canada geese are a signature sight. The park also has an accessible children's playground, an outdoor pool and a skate park.
Quarry Hill Park
Quarry Hill Park covers 329 acres on Rochester's east side, with more than eight miles of trails that range from paved paths to rugged hillside routes. Highlights include the three-acre Harry L. Buck Children's Pond, a restored oak savanna, a limestone fossil quarry and sandstone caves. The City of Rochester owns and manages the park in partnership with the Friends of Quarry Hill Nature Center.
The city trail network
Rochester has mapped 12 trail loops, from under a mile to more than six miles, plus 11 routes that each measure a 5K. The trails welcome walkers, cyclists and skaters and are stroller and wheelchair friendly. The city also publishes an interactive map showing which trails and sidewalks are maintained in winter.
Douglas State Trail
Managed by the Minnesota DNR, the Douglas State Trail runs about 12.7 miles from northwest Rochester to Pine Island, passing through the small town of Douglas. It follows an abandoned railroad grade through some of Minnesota's richest farmland, with a paved treadway for bicyclists, hikers and in-line skaters and a separate natural-surface treadway for horseback riders and snowmobilers.
Chester Woods Park
Just east of Rochester, Olmsted County's Chester Woods Park covers 1,333 acres at the headwaters of Bear Creek. Chester Lake spans 118 acres, held back by one of the largest earthen dams in Minnesota at 96 feet tall. The county lists about 15 miles of trails through undeveloped areas, a mile-long hard-surfaced trail linking the campground, boat launch and fishing pier, about 7.7 miles of equestrian trails and roughly 12 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails.
Oxbow Park and Zollman Zoo
North of Byron, Oxbow Park offers about 8 miles of trails through prairie and wooded hills plus access to the Zumbro River. Its Zollman Zoo features only animals native to Minnesota, more than 30 species, and the nature center is open year-round.
Lake Zumbro Park
About 11 miles north of Rochester in Oronoco, Lake Zumbro Park has a two-lane motorized boat launch with an invasive species cleaning station and a separate launch for canoes and kayaks.
- Golfers have four city-operated courses to choose from.
