Schools & Community in Rochester

Rochester Public Schools, RCTC, the University of Minnesota Rochester and Winona State University-Rochester: learning at every stage.

Rochester is a city that values learning. About 50.9% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor's degree or higher, according to the Census Bureau, and 94.7% have at least a high school diploma. From kindergarten through graduate programs, families have options close to home. Here is an overview.

Rochester Public Schools

Rochester Public Schools, Independent School District 535, serves the city from its district office at 615 7th Street SW. Alongside traditional schools, the district highlights career-focused programs such as P-TECH 535 and CTECH, which connect students with hands-on technical learning. School boundaries can matter to buyers, so always confirm the assigned schools for a specific address directly with the district.

Rochester Community and Technical College

RCTC's roots go back to 1915, when the junior college was created on a motion by Dr. Charles Mayo and classes began with 17 students downtown. The college calls itself the oldest public two-year college in Minnesota. It moved to its current campus in 1968, and the main campus now covers 518 acres with Goddard Library, the 350-seat Hill Theater, a Health Science Center, the Rochester Sports Center and Rochester Regional Stadium. The west campus Heintz Center is on College View Road.

Winona State University-Rochester

Winona State University-Rochester's main campus sits on the RCTC campus at 859 30th Avenue SE, with a downtown site on South Broadway and programs at the Heintz Center. Each campus has a nursing simulation lab, and the Elementary Education program is housed at the Heintz Center. RCTC's "Path to Purple" program lets students earn an associate degree at RCTC and a bachelor's degree at WSU-Rochester.

University of Minnesota Rochester

Founded in 2006, the University of Minnesota Rochester is located downtown, in the heart of the medical community, with just under 1,000 students and an average class size of 20. The idea of a University of Minnesota presence in Rochester dates to the 1950s, when local legislators and community advocates began campaigning for it. Its Bachelor of Science in Health Professions offers echocardiography, radiography, respiratory care and sonography in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.
